Tips for wannabe hosties (Part 2)

The interview. Congratulations, you have scored an interview with an airline!
It is common for the first round interview to be a group interview. The recruiters will put you into a group alongside other hostie hopefuls, and give you several tasks to undertake as a team. The key word for you to remember here is participation. The recruiters are looking for people to contribute to the team effort and don’t really care what you say, unless it’s “I think your opinion is stupid” to a fellow interviewee. Don’t try and dominate the discussion. The airlines don’t want bossy know-it-alls, although you are likely to develop into a bossy know-it-all later on in your hostie career.
Remember that reality TV show ‘Big Brother’? Imagine you are a contestant under constant observation- by the recruiters. Be on your best behaviour at all times, from the moment you walk into the interview to the end of the recruitment day. Be sociable and friendly to your competitors.
Be yourself. Recruiters have done courses in psychology and know if your ‘hostie personality’ is just an act.
The one-on-one interview will usually be the next stage of the recruitment process. Prepare lots of examples of customer service/ human interaction situations in your head before the interview. When did you handle a difficult circumstance relating to people? (Don’t talk about fighting with your parents) How did you resolve it? How do you deal with irate customers?
The interview outfit/ makeup/ hair and nails. The key word for you to remember here is professional. You want to look good/ attractive but not like you’re about to head off to a nightclub straight after the interview. A simple, nicely cut suit looks flattering on just about anyone. Plain or pinstriped – no loud colours or patterns. And of course your shoes should match your suit and be fairly comfortable. If you are on the shorter side, there’s little (no pun intended) point in wearing killer high heels. You may feel taller but won’t deceive anyone. And boys, leave your high heels for dress ups at home.
As for makeup, in my opinion ‘natural’ is best. Leave the ‘clown-face’ makeup for clubbing. If you are a boy, don’t wear makeup unless a spotty outbreak coincides with interview day, in which case subtle cover-up may help you look better.
Hair should be neat and clean. Strictly no ponytails on boys.
Nails should also be neat and clean. Get a manicure if you really want. Talons decorated with diamantes, animal prints etc should be removed before the interview.
If there’s something else I have forgotten to mention, let me know.
Best of luck in your quest to be a queen of the sky!
