Bimbos and Himbos?
October 12th 2006 01:48
In my hostie days, people with normal jobs used to tell me they envied what I did for a living. A friend still curses the fact that she is the offspring of very short parents and can’t even reach overhead stowage compartments on tiptoes, therefore having no chance of fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a hostie.
Why is it then, that hosties are on the receiving end of some extremely atrocious behaviour? It is not uncommon for passengers to hurl expletives at hosties because they didn’t get a window seat or because they had to wait more than a minute to get a drink.
Why is it that passengers are not the obedient and cooperative people I assumed they would be before I joined the hostie profession? I’m talking about passengers who refuse to wear a seatbelt or switch off their mobile phones even after many polite requests.
I realise hosties are not brain surgeons or rocket scientists but some respect would’ve been appreciated. Can the lack of respect be attributed to passengers thinking that hosties are a bunch of bimbos and himbos?
Not all of my former hostie colleagues were airheads. Many were uni graduates, and I’ve met journalists, nurses, doctors and interpreters.
Admittedly there have been bimbo/himbo moments. Like when a bimbo injected herself instead of the passenger with a medical “pen” that is used for cases of allergic reactions to certain types of food. And when a himbo read out the emergency evacuation instructions instead of the regular safety PA at the start of a flight, and still wasn’t aware of his mistake as he was telling passengers to put on their life vests and jump down the slide.
Let me reiterate. Not all hosties are airheads. There are intelligent ones. Even though hosties are basically glorified waitresses/waiters in the sky it isn’t impossible that some of them are smart.
Do people in the normal working world disrespect hosties and think they are all bimbos and himbos?

As far as bleating back at you I think it may be because we feel and look like cattle moving up the ramp.
Best way to keep cattle under control is a good old Aussie invention the cattle prod! much better than a disguised pen.
Love your comments
