A most unusual flight

December 12th 2006 10:43
I was left terribly disappointed after my recent flight to Melbourne. It had nothing to do with the airline's service- I only expected to arrive to my destination in one piece travelling on a budget carrier- disappointment arose from the fact that my flight was uneventful, a complete snoozefest equal to watching cricket or ‘The English Patient’.

No offence to my travel companion- after the initial amusement of us belting out the chorus from ‘Memories’ as I was reminded of a previous life upon observing the hosties going about their pre-takeoff duties- I was utterly bored. So much for getting some interesting material for my blog…

What happened to the chaos of boarding?
Passengers boarded the plane in an orderly fashion.

Where was the passenger that refused to cooperate with fellow travellers and hosties by claiming ownership of a particular seat?
A passenger happily volunteered to swap seats so my friend and I could sit next to each other.

What happened to those annoying passengers who never listened to the PA and then asked the hosties to repeat the information?
The majority of passengers paid attention to the Cabin Manager’s PA, evident by the on-cue laughter which followed his announcement about “sending smokers out to the sit on the wing as punishment”.

When were the passengers going to start protesting over having to pay for drinks and meals?
People didn’t have a problem with handing over money for a bottle of water despite already having spent a hundred odd dollars for the airfare.

When were the passengers going to complain about how horrible the food was?
The “healthy, hearty, mouthwatering gourmet sandwich” that my neighbour ordered from the attractively worded menu in reality looked like processed cheese and a sad piece of lettuce in between 2 slices of plain white bread, but rather than hear her accuse the airline of false advertising, she devoured her sandwich to the very last crumb.

When was a hostie going to lose the plot because the passengers’ demands and rudeness were becoming unbearable?
The cooperation and good manners from the passengers seemed too good to be true.

Where was the pandemonium that ensued the plane’s landing? Why weren’t the passengers pushing and shoving each other in an attempt to disembark first?
The passengers on my flight actually waited until the plane stopped moving and the seatbelt sign was switched off before they got up off their seats and disembarked the aircraft like civilised human beings.

A most unusual flight indeed!

Wow. I've heard of those kind of flights. I thought maybe they were just the stuff of urban myth. I feel encoraged!
